Do You Have the Ability to Print with White Ink?

This article describes how to print white Ink and other white printing options.

White Ink on a Desk Printer

Epson also sells a white ink cartridge that can be used with inkjet printers. While this might be a good option for smaller print runs with your home printer, the price for the white ink cart is significantly higher than the typical ink cartridges.

Reverse the Dark Color

You can approach the print or design project differently. It is possible to print the dark color on white paper. To make an element white, reverse or “knockout” the white element or type from the background. It is not necessary to apply ink anywhere but around the background that you desire white. The essence of “printing white” is that there is no ink.

If your design contains white elements, such as a heart with a white background and a heart with a white heart, the red will be printed only. The paper behind the heart will not show through. This option is cheaper to print. If the paper used isn’t white, then this method won’t work.

Mix silver ink with white ink

You can achieve a near-white effect by mixing opaque white ink with silver ink. This will provide adequate coverage. However, not all print shops offer this service and the price can be higher than regular printing.

Use White Foil

You can also use white foil stamping to create the white effect you desire. Foils can be found in various textures, such as metallic, gloss and matte. Obtrude white gloss or matte finishes mimic the look of paint and ink. However, you can create special effects by using silvery, pearlescent or off-white foils.

Professional printing houses typically offer foil processing options. There may be special requirements when it comes to preparing your artwork in foil stamping or embossing. This service typically comes with a premium price.

Flexography White Inks and Screen Printing are two options.

Inks that are opaque in color can be used for screen printing and flexible ography methods. These are common methods to print on clothes and plastics. These printing options are available for projects that require white ink. Screen printing is sometimes used in addition to textile printing.

Why is it so hard to use white ink

You have many options when it comes to white ink for dark paper. But, there are not many. Printing white can be more costly than printing other ink colors, regardless of which method you choose.

Only a handful of commercial print shops are able to print white ink on black paper. The service is expensive for those that do.

Offset printing uses translucent inks. A translucent white ink will not cover dark colored paper because it is translucent. A print shop may use opaque white ink but multiple applications will be needed to achieve sufficient coverage. This can increase the cost of a project.

Consider painting a white room that was previously painted a dark shade. If the white paint is to be applied with multiple coats, it must have sufficient coverage. Otherwise, the white room will become darker.

Additional costs include the time that the staff of a print shop spends cleaning the printing press to remove any ink color that might muddy the white printer ink.
