What You Need to Know About Conference Calls from Your iPhone

This article shows you how to make a free conference call with your iPhone without the need to dial special phone numbers, remember long access codes or pay for conferences. This article covers iOS 13 and older.

How to Conference call on iPhone

Although the conference call feature is available in the iPhone Phone App, it varies from one cellular carrier to the next. The United States allows you to have up to five people, including you, on AT&T and T-Mobile. You can also have six people if your Verizon HD voice (formerly Advanced Calling), is used on an iPhone 6, 6 Plus or later. Sprint has up to three people.

Follow these steps to start a conference call from your iPhone.

  1. Open the Phone App on your iPhone to call the first person that you would like to join the conference.
  2. After the person answers, you can choose or call. The contacts list will now open.
  3. Click on Contacts and tap the name of the person to be added to your conference call.
    To dial the next number, you can also use your keypad.
  4. Answer the question and choose a merge call to start the conference.
  5. Keep going with the previous steps until you have added all the participants to the call, or reached the participant limit.

If you’re already a participant in the conference call and someone calls, select Accept.

Once you have answered the call, choose a merge call to add another caller to your conference.

How to talk privately and disconnect individuals during an iPhone conference call

Your iPhone can be used to hold a conference call. You can either speak to one person privately or disconnect from the call.

Only the person initiating the conference call can see all participants.

To speak with one person on the conference call and not the others, tap the or the Arrow next to Conference ( iOS 6) at the top.

Scroll down to the Conference screen and tap Privacy below the name you wish to speak to privately.

The Conference screen allows you to disconnect individual calls from the conference call, without having to end the whole call. To disconnect individual callers:

  • iOS 7 or later: Tap End below the name and email address of the person you wish to disconnect from the conference.
  • iOS 6 or earlier: Tap the red icon beside the name to disconnect the conference call. Next, tap End.

  2. Under the name and email of the person you would like to speak privately, select Public from the Conference screen.
  3. The Conference screen allows you to disconnect individual calls from the conference call, without having to end the whole call. To disconnect individual callers:
    • iOS 7 or later: Tap End below the name and email address of the person you want removed from the conference call.
    • iOS 6 or earlier: Tap the red icon next to the name and choose End.
