Xfinity Mobile: What is it and is it worth it?

Xfinity Mobile is Comcast’s mobile service provider. It can be used alongside your TV and internet services. If you already have internet and cable, it makes sense to add your mobile service. Xfinity Mobile is a compelling option when you consider the benefits of bundling these services together.

Comcast customers certainly feel the same way. Xfinity Mobile was launched in 2017 and has seen a growth of 4.6 million customers over the five years.

This rapid growth was not possible because Comcast began constructing its own cell towers. Xfinity Mobile, or MVNO, is a mobile virtual operator (or MVNO) that piggybacks on one or more major carriers’ networks. Comcast’s example is Verizon’s network, which includes 5G coverage and the internet provider’s Wi-Fi hotspots.

Wireless customers may find that an MVNO offers a better deal than major carriers while still getting great coverage. We will be discussing the MVNOs in more detail about the benefits and drawbacks of getting service from a virtual operator such as Xfinity.

Xfinity Mobile is all about bundling. If you do not already have a business relationship with Comcast or you are willing to make Comcast your internet service provider, then you may not be eligible for Xfinity Mobile. If you meet these criteria, Xfinity Mobile could be yours. Unlimited talk, text, and data costs $45 per month for a single line. This price drops when you add more lines.

Is it worth switching to Comcast to get your cellular service? Let’s take a look at all the details and see if Xfinity Mobile is the right choice for you.

How Xfinity Mobile works

Comcast subscribers are the only ones who can access Xfinity Mobile. This wireless service is based on Verizon’s network, which was the clear winner in our Fastest Wireless Network testing. It also includes access to Xfinity Wi Fi hotspots across the country.

Subscribers have the option of choosing between unlimited data plans or only paying for what you use. No matter what data plan you choose, unlimited nationwide talk and text is included. Xfinity Mobile subscribers pay no access fees up to five lines. Subscribers may be charged access fees up to $20 per line by some carriers, but these access fees are usually included in the monthly rate for unlimited plans.

Comcast TV subscribers can use the Xfinity Stream TV app on their smartphone to stream live TV and on-demand content, regardless of where they may be. However, it will count against any data allowance if you don’t have an unlimited plan. We’ll get to that in a moment.

Xfinity Mobile functions in the same way as any other wireless carrier. Two key differences are that you need to have a Comcast subscription. Your connection will automatically transfer to a Comcast Wi Fi hotspot when it is within range. It’s likely that one will exist. Comcast stated that there were 19 million hotspots in the country, and more are being added. Wi-Fi will give you a speed boost and, if you don’t have an unlimited data plan, you can save data charges. This Wi-Fi/cellular approach is also used by Republic Wireless, TextNow and many other low-cost carriers like TextNow .

Xfinity Mobile: What does it cost?

Prices for Xfinity Mobile range from $15 per month to $60 per month for one line, depending on which options you choose. These prices do not include taxes or fees. Prices will vary by state.

You get 1GB data and unlimited talk/text with the minimum $15 plan. Additional $15 is charged for each additional GB.

Xfinity has been modified by the Gig to accommodate new customers who share the same bucket of data over multiple lines. The new system allows you to choose how much data you wish to use, and you can get a lower price for more data. One example: 1GB of data costs $15; 3GB costs $30, and 10GB is $60.

The Gig plans offer video streaming in HD resolution and LTE Hotspot speeds. Data Saver reduces video resolution to 480p, and slows down hotspot speeds up to 600kbps. This is done to prevent you from exceeding your data limit and creating a higher monthly cost.

Xfinity mobile: starting at $15/month for 1GB

Xfinity Mobile is available only to Comcast customers. It offers unlimited and gig plans. The first starts at $15/month and includes 1GB of data, while the second costs $45 per month for one line. Additional lines of unlimited data are eligible for discounts. Xfinity Mobile will give you a $50 prepaid card for bringing your phone.

Xfinity Mobile’s unlimited plan is $45 per month for a single line. Unlimited plans are more appealing for families because Xfinity lowers the cost when you have multiple lines.

If you have more than one line, you will pay $30 each. A two-person family will pay $60 per month, while a four-person family will pay $120. You pay $20 more per line if you add a fifth or more lines.

Xfinity, like other carriers, will slow down your speeds if there is more data than you have — 20GB per month in this instance. This is lower than what major carriers have. Verizon’s 5G Do More and 5G Play More plans will slow down data speeds if your monthly data usage exceeds 50GB. However, at $80 per month for one data line, these plans are $35 more expensive than Xfinity Mobile.

Unlimited plans limit video resolution to 480p when streaming over the cellular network. Hotspot speeds are also limited to 600 kbps. You can add $20 to your monthly bill if you need HD video at all times.

Subscribers can switch between the Unlimited plan and the “By the Gig” plan at any moment without penalty. This is great for those who have only occasional high-data usage months.

If you choose Xfinity Mobile, make sure to enable two factor authentication and link your account with a PIN. Some customers have reported that their cell numbers were stolen.

Xfinity Mobile has attractively priced plans compared with the best unlimited plans offered by the major carriers. T-Mobile’s Essentials plan is the cheapest unlimited plan. It costs $60 per month. Unlimited Starter is $65 per month at AT&T. Using Xfinity Mobile with its unlimited data plan will save you $15-20

Some rival MVNOs offer unlimited data at a lower price — Visible charges $30 per month for unlimited data, with taxes and fees. Mint mobile charges $30 per month. However, to get this rate, you must commit to one year of service.

Xfinity Mobile is a good choice for the best family mobile phone plans because of its discounts on multiple lines. Today, you would pay $120 for four lines unlimited data at Xfinity. This is lower than the usual $42 T-Mobile charges for four lines on its Essentials unlimited plan. T-Mobile currently offers a promotion that waives the cost for the third line. This means you only pay $105 per month. It is worth noting that Xfinity allows you to mix and match lines so that your family members can have unlimited data, while those with lower data can pay per gigabyte. This can help lower your monthly bills.

Visible has stopped offering discounts for multiple lines of data. However, the $120 it would charge customers to have four lines of unlimited data is comparable to Xfinity’s pricing.

Xfinity Mobile’s per gigabyte pricing is generouser than other MVNOs but it is not the most affordable. Tello charges $19 per month for 5GB LTE data. This is $11 less than the Xfinity charge for 3GB. GoogleFi charges $10 per gigabyte for LTE data, plus $20 for call and text. However, instead of rounding up after you reach a certain gigabyte, you are charged $1 per 100MB. Xfinity charges $30 for 2.1GB, while $21 for 2.1GB. Comcast does not require that you get either cable or internet service for these services.

Xfinity Mobile: What is 5G?

It was only a matter time before MVNOs such as Xfinity Mobile could use the faster 5G network . Xfinity Mobile service launched in May 2020. The good news is that you don’t need to pay more for faster service. This feature is included in all Xfinity Mobile plans.

Xfinity customers paying $45 per month for unlimited data have access to 5G at half the price of Verizon customers. Verizon offers 5G as part of its Play More or Do More unlimited plans that start at $80 per line. The $90-per-month Get More plan includes 5G.

There are some limitations to Xfinity Mobile 5G service. You will need a 5G-ready smartphone, but these are available at different prices. You can grab a Samsung Galaxy S22 U or iPhone 13 PRO Max. Or, save money by purchasing midrange phones such as the Pixel 6a and GalaxyA53.

Verizon 5G now covers coast to coast and covers 2,700 towns and cities, but those speeds aren’t as fast as LTE. Verizon’s faster CBand 5G was launched earlier in the year. It covers 100 million people and Verizon expects it will reach 175 million by year’s end. Recent 5G performance reports show that T-Mobile has faster speeds and a wider network, while Verizon 5G is the best for reliability.

Xfinity Mobile requires no contract

Within 30 days of the next billing cycle date, you can cancel your Xfinity Mobile Plan. You are responsible only for current month’s charges and any outstanding device payments. You can cancel your Xfinity Mobile plan within 30 days and return the device for a full refund. There is a $35 restocking charge. After 30 days, the restocking fee will be charged and you will have to pay any remaining charges.

Xfinity Mobile: Which devices are supported by Xfinity Mobile?

Xfinity Mobile’s biggest problem was its limited selection of devices. The company mainly sells flagships. Xfinity Mobile has increased its range of Android phones over the years and allows users to bring their own handsets to the network.

iPhone users will see an updated selection. The iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 are available. The iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2022), are also available to save money.

All three Galaxy S22 Android models as well as the Galaxy Z fold 4, Galaxy Z flip 4 are available through Xfinity. The Flip and Older Fold models are still available at reduced rates. All three Pixel models are available at Xfinity. You can save money by switching to the Moto G or Samsung Galaxy A series smartphones.

Xfinity allows iPhone 6 and older users to bring their own iPhone. Only a few models of Pixel and Samsung smartphones are currently eligible for BYOD.

You can send a supported phone to Xfinity for a free SIM card. Once you receive it, sign in to activate your account.

Xfinity Mobile also offers tablets (all iPad models), smartwatches, (all Apple Watches), and other accessories such as cases and charging pads. An Xfinity Mobile plan that covers these devices will cost you $10 per month.

Xfinity Mobile – Cancelling your service

Comcast says that if you move your number to another carrier your Xfinity Mobile service is automatically canceled. You will only be charged for the data that you use between the beginning of your billing cycle, and the day you cancel. The total cancellation charge for unlimited users will vary depending on their billing cycle.

You are responsible for any unpaid payments if you make payments on a device. If you have at least one other Xfinity service, such as internet, then you are responsible for any outstanding payments. If you have at least one other Xfinity service (e.g. internet), you can make payments even if you don’t want to pay the balance upfront.

Xfinity Mobile’s competition

There are many MVNOs, but Mint Mobile and Google Fiber stand out as Xfinity Mobile’s main competitors. Xfinity Mobile is a better option for Comcast customers who wish to be tied to the broadband provider. Its pricing structure is fairly fair and remarkably similar with Visible, another important Verizon-based MVNO.

Visible’s twin $30 unlimited plans and $45 unlimited plans are its claim to fame. This plan offers additional perks, such as international calling. Visible has the added advantage of being able to run on Verizon’s network.

Mint Mobile offers one of the most affordable plans. Your data allocation can be purchased upfront in three-month, six-month or one year chunks. T-Mobile’s MVNO operates on 4GB, 10GB and 15GB data, with unlimited options. This is the most exciting, as it costs $30 per month for three months (90 upfront). Although some people may be reluctant to pay upfront for their data, it can lead to long-term savings.

Google Fi is the final option. The MVNO charges $20 for unlimited text and talk, and $10 per gigabyte. Google Fi offers unlimited plans at $50 per month and unlimited plans at $65 per month with unlimited plus. Fi offers refunds for data that you don’t use in order to get gigabyte pricing. Let’s say you use only 500MB per month. Google will only charge $5, and you won’t be charged for any additional data unlike Xfinity Mobile. However, Fi may not be the best value if you use lots of data.

Is Xfinity Mobile really worth it?

It all depends on your situation. However, Comcast’s mobile services seem like a solid value to some customers, especially single users who need unlimited data. The 5G included is the cherry on the cake. Families may also want to check out Xfinity Mobile, which offers discounts on multiple lines.

Xfinity Mobile is a good option for users who can manage to use less than 3GB per month. Xfinity Mobile is less appealing than the best prepaid plans, as you will see above.

Xfinity Mobile has become more attractive because you can now bring your phone to the service. However, Android users will need specific Samsung or Google phones in order to use this feature. Check if your phone is compatible with the Comcast checker tool. (opens in new window).

You can use Xfinity Mobile to travel to other countries. However, you will be charged for data, talk, and text (rates vary depending on country). Also, international data plans are more affordable.
